Affirmative Action in 2008: Its about quality not quantity

McCain decided to support an Arizona Affirmative Action Ban.
Obama said he does not support quotas.....hmm. Everyone has something about this issue as always...

So does posh

It’s hard to figure out when Affirmative Action became a race of numbers rather than equality. It surely didn’t start out that way….but then again nothing ever does. When “Affirmative Action” was introduced it was done in the spirit of equally. Colloquially speaking white majority men had all jobs and power and women and people of color got tired of it. So they came up with Affirmative Action and others- both white, black, Hispanic, Asian, Men, Women (all posh of course) – decided to go along with it.

The plan was:

  • Give more opportunities to women and people of color
  • Give more contracts to women and minority owned businesses
  • Break the glass ceiling in corporate America

…… and what it seems like, from Arizona’s newest referendum, these messages were some how lost within people just trying to fill quotas. But, in our opinion, Arizona’ s referendum, is NOT THE ANSWER.

Affirmative action is not an issue that has been frequently addressed on the campaign trail, CNN Reports. (With a black man running for president, this is the ultimate affirmative action plan, lololololol posh digresses)

Asked in April about his stance on affirmative action, McCain said, "it's in the eye of the beholder."

The eye of the beholder? We've heard that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but to be honest there are a lot of both pretty and ugly people walking around dazed and confused because of this exact mantra! Affirmative Action may not be the solution of all race relations, but if executed RIGHT, it certainly doesn’t add to the problem. Removing it from any state’s program is ludicrous. Posh asks those in Arizona, where is the evaluation? How were these “quota’s” executed? Who was in charge of these said programs to make sure that corruption or preferencial treatment did not happen?

Again, we, here at posh are unsure about how affirmative action became a race of numbers, but we would like to engage everyone in conversation to change it! What do you think?

Getting rid of affirmative action will not do away with the race problem. Women still need the same opportuties granted to everyone else. People of color will not go up the social ladder just because Barack Obama is the presumptive Democratic nominee…

Bottom line, we still need affirmative action…

:POSH SHOPS in AMERICA: CNN SPECIAL Preview

(flckr)

Today, CNN presents another installment of BLACK in America by Soledad O'Brien. O'Brien worked for the past 18 months on developing this story. Sources for the story are numerous including:• National Council of Negro WomenThe Women of Color NetworkMarry Your Baby DaddyDaddy's PromiseEast River Development AllianceBoys & Girls Clubs of AmericaJack and JillBig Brothers, Big Sisters and more.

The CNN website features a behind the scenes article that is near and dear to posh politics- BLACK and SHOPPING in America. In the article, three women (in their 20's) tell the story of racial profiling, discrimination, and desecration in Atlanta, GA.

"We were dressed professionally," Wells told me[Soledad O'Brien]. "It was casual Friday. We had on dresses, and casual office wear. We were racially profiled. It was as simple as that."

Wells says she and her friends were detained by six Gwinnett County, Georgia, police officers for "about an hour and a half" at the entrance of an Old Navy store owned by Gap. Their crime, as Wells sees it, was being black in America.

Leah Wells tells me [Soledad O'Brien] she is "coming to an understanding" with Gap. When I contacted Gap myself, a spokesperson told me an internal investigation led to the firing of a manager. Later she e-mailed this statement: "We realize it's probably too late. We regret that we did not apologize for what these ladies experienced at our store, and this goes against everything we stand for as a company."

This story is not the first and sadly, it probably won't be the last. It's sad Leah and her friends could not go "power-shopping" just like her fellow white women would without being falsely charged. This issue and more will be covered in CNN's Black in America. We urge you, no matter what color you are, to watch it!

Leave a comment, has this ever happened to you? Let posh know you are watching tonight!

Martini's up for a close CNN look on being BLACK in AMERICA!!

Posh CAMPAIGN: SAVE our STARBUCKS!!!!

Ok, so don't laugh. We know, we know, we know.

We just ran a post about the eminent recession and now we are talking about OVER-PRICED coffee. But what do staggering gas prices have to do with the price of a venti non fat no whip sugar free extra hot white mocha in The US?

We won't answer that question! But now that the Starbucks Corp has made plans to close 600 locations (13 in ATL, GA where posh lives), a new phenomenon is taking hold to give an answer. It's called The SAVE our STARBUCKS Campaign!

Election season is a great time of year! A time where people are so immersed in political jargon that every issue seems important enough to call for signs, banners, large symbols with red lines through them, and bull horns! The Starbucks issue is no different! In towns as small as Bloomfield, N.M., and metropolises as large as New York, customers and city officials are starting to write letters, place phone calls, circulate petitions and otherwise plead with the coffee company to change its mind.

Although the states with the largest number of closings are California (large state), Florida (state that always has poll issues), and Texas (Bush country), the impact is greater proportionally elsewhere. Mississippi, for instance, is slated to lose 41% of its Starbucks; North Dakota, 33%; Minnesota, 32%; and Nebraska, 30%, according to an analysis by William Blair & Co. analyst Sharon Zackfia. That calculation excludes Starbucks stores run by third-party licensees.

Going back to that lingering issue of the recession, the Starbucks closures could mean Starbucks will eliminate about 12,000 jobs. This comes out to about 20 jobs per store.. In this terrible job market who needs that? Areas that depend on Starbuck to drive customer traffic will also be affected.

posh math: 9 times out of 10, if you'll spend $5 for coffee, you'll at least spend $10 on a cocktail? Right?

We're not saying that "slinging mochas at starbucks" is the best job in the world, but Starbucks has been the top on list for employee satisfaction, benefits, and loyality... It deserves its employees, and to some extent its customers.

Further more, less Starbucks means longer waits at the ones that remain. No one wants longer lines at Starbucks! Waiting in long lines in 4 inch stilettos is not smart or fashionable.

..................................................................................................
Here is our petition:

Dear Senator McCain, Senator Obama, Senator Clinton (for good measure):

We love Starbucks and we know our readers do too. Please fix the economy so that the Starbucks name can live on! No, we are not receiving a lifetime supply of coffee (but that wouldn't hurt) or any money for this plea. We are just hardworking, posh Americans who love the smell of coffee in the morning. As we run to our business meetings, open our labtops, or search our closets for the hottest outfit in the morning, our coffee makes us feel good. It makes us feel "American." We are sure that Starbucks has sponsored many late night cabinet meetings for the Administration. We are sure that Starbucks has been there for both the House and the Senate during those tough times. Be there for them now!

Save our Starbucks!

Sincerely,

posh politics

Poshpolitics: Did someone say Recession?

Every media outlet is talking about the economy. Whether its staggering gas costs, higher grocery bills, or the ugly fear of unemployment everyone seems to be dealing with this not-so-posh economic pinch....

You can agree or disagree.... Recession? Or No Recession?

Well, according to one of posh's FAVORITE books in the WORLD....the DICTIONARY, a recession is defined as a reduction in economic activity....so that would mean, yes, we are in some kind of recession. Maybe not the World War I kind, maybe not the ration out rice kind, maybe not the "every one panic and blame the government for messing up our economic system again' kind, but, yes, we are in a recession.

now posh did not go to school in economics, but we do understand practicality....
the next post will as well...

Posh Perspective: New Rules would threaten Right to Contraceptives

The article below was sent to us by our friends at PLANETWIRE.org.

It alerts posh to a certain federal funding language, that if passed as is, could threaten the reproductive rights of all women. It's important to note the power of a bill within a bill...or more importantly the definition of certain "subjects" or "topics" within a bill.

In this case, "abortion" is not the main topic of the bill, but the language within this bill could affect abortion, and more importantly, the women's right to choose.....

posh is not for or against abortion...but it is for public information and against IGNORANCE... IGNORANCE is neither smart nor fashionable~

Please take the time to read the article below, if you have any questions. we'll try to solve them, or get someone who will.
...............................................................................

WASHINGTON, July 15 – Reproductive health advocates reacted with outrage today to reports that the Bush administration plans to require recipients of aid under federal health programs to agree to hire people who object to abortion and many kinds of birth control.

The report, first published in today’s The New York Times, said the draft change in rules for federal funding would require hospitals, clinics, researchers, medical schools and state and local governments to sign "written certifications" of non-discrimination against such applicants in order to be funded under any program run by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The proposal would define “abortion” as "any of the various procedures — including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action — that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation."

Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards said she was “gravely concerned” that such language would “radically redefine abortion to include some of the most common and effective methods of birth control.”

Mary Jane Gallagher, president of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, which represents birth control providers, said such methods would include oral contraceptives and emergency contraception. The new rule, she said, would be “unprecedented” in “allowing individuals, institutions and programs receiving Health and Human Services funds to refuse to provide necessary health care services, including contraception.”

Marilyn Keefe, Director of Reproductive Health Programs of the National Partnership for Women & Families, called the proposal “an ill-conceived political ploy designed to win favor from those determined to deny women basic health services.” She said it would “put politics ahead of women’s health” and “shows callous disregard for low-income women facing unplanned pregnancies.” She pointed out that 90 percent of women in America use birth control, and that the proposal to appeal to the remaining 10 percent would be “political pandering at its very worst.”

Recent research by the Women Donors Network has found that family planning opponents are only 9 percent of all likely voters, and that the rest overwhelmingly support policies and programs to expand access to safe and effective methods of birth control.

ARE you Posh? Who Even REAds this STUFF?

(click the picture above for photo source)

The coolest picture EVA!!!!!!

So this picture headlined an LA Times article called "Who listens to the blogging heads?"

It profiled the blog reader, and more specifically, the political blog reader saying:

"Who are these political blog readers?Compared with those who don't read political blogs, they are more likely to have a college degree and, obviously, are more interested in politics. They are more likely to identify themselves as Democrats or Republicans, rather than as independents, and are more likely to call themselves liberals or conservatives rather than moderates. Political blog readers are more likely to vote, give money to candidates or simply talk about politics. They live and breathe politics."

Live and breathe politics, huh? Well we are posh politics, so that means our readers should LIVE. EAT. SLEEP. SHOP. PLAY. and BREATHE posh like political things? Not necessarily.

I say this to say, posh is not the place to preach to the choir. Like the mantra on the left states, we comment on things that are smart and fashionable....that usually have some sort of political connotation...but we do not look to have the "cookie" cutter, or in our case, "classic martini glass" readership... If there is a topic you want to see, let us know. Is there a comment made that you don't think is posh then tell us. Please comment on our blogs, please email us when there is a problem....and KEEP READING...

Ok. We're done...Read the article though, it's interesting!

JACKSON and Lorena Bobbit: SO NOT POSH

FYI- Lorena Bobbit was not and will never be posh

I am not happy with the fact that I must add to this posting, but here is more on Rev. Jackson and his rude comments. Though he's on the way to Spain, his presence is still very much felt in the US! Jesse, through everything, you have been a strong representation of civil rights in America and what black people can do if we put our minds too it....Stop putting your mind to defaming our black leadership.....Please stop it.

Political stunt or not, using the N-word is not posh. It wasn't posh when NAS did it to sell records, and its not posh now. Help the Obama campaign? What about continuing to perpetuate the stereotype that of black people can never work together? That black people always fight? That black people are savage barbarians with a flag burning in their fire places???

This is the last time we will post ANYTHING in reference to this story...Here is a link from the AJC and the Associated Press. Make a comment and then let's move on to more posh things in the world!

Posh Dreams of MerryGoRounds, Elephants, and Civic Responsibility

As reported by the Associated Press- "Going after the women's vote, Democrat Barack Obama chastised Republican John McCain on Thursday over his opposition to an equal-pay Senate bill, his support for conservative-leaning Supreme Court justices and his abortion-rights objections. "

The Feminine "Merry-go-round"
Here we go ladies....We are on the merry go round AGAIN! This is NOT the first time that Obama has had to directly address the women in America. But now, with Mrs. Clinton totally out of the EXECUTIVE - but not the ENTIRE - picture, Barack must assure female society that he has "her" best interest at heart....

But with a gorgeous wife (people are still talking about that PURPLE dress GIRL!), two daughters, and a white mother (YES the RACE is important....we must show diversity here), WHY wouldn't he? Is that a stupid question?

I don't think so, because the debate alone shows the power of women. Yes, spoken about in many different conversations, for many purposes, anectoctal cliches, or subject correlations, here in relation to decision 2008, we too BRING UP the POWER of the KittyKat. One cannot just like women, smile at them, or "look like them"- come on California - to understand the plight of the American woman. To understand them is to be able to speak to them. To be able to speak to them is to win their heart. To win their heart is to win their vote- and further more the WHITE HOUSE.

At this time, I don't feel like delving into the differences in the American Woman. Is American Woman even a "politically correct" term? I dare a politician use that term in front of the wrong audience. Anyway, there is just no time to go there in this article- that would definitely not be posh (smart or fashionable). What I will say is that ALL politicians, big/small, black/white, male/female need to continuously work to alleviate problems concerning women in this country. It should not simply be the next bullet point, campaign slogan, or sound bite. It should be a main priority...and despite how I feel about Mrs. Clinton's nomination run, husband, race, public image, temperament, make-up choices, haircut, or style of dress, I applaud her for at least bringing THIS ISSUE to the FOREFRONT. Thanks for being posh!

FLYING PINK

Did you just ask if that was Jo Ann Davidson from the GRAND OL Party? Why yes, fellow blogger, concerned citizen, that IS! I think its important to recognize all facets of the woman voter, especially as it pertains to two of the STRONGEST political parties in the United State of America...I also think its a good thing to keep your enemies closer than your friends.

Posh JEANS: Does your style in DENIM Effect your Politcal OPINION

Well, no. Your JEANS do not decide your vote, but your GENES might...An interesting play on words that both smart and fashionable...An interesting Article on this topic as well...

no MARTINIS on this one, just posh information

READ BELOW:
_______________________________________________________

By Steven ReinbergHealthDay Reporter Tue Jul 1, 7:03 PM ET

TUESDAY, July 1 (HealthDay News) -- Heading to the polls on Nov. 4? If so, your genes may be driving you there, a new study suggests.

In fact, as much as 50 percent of whether you vote or not may be genetically determined, says a team at the University of California, San Diego. Genes may even be more important to your tendency to cast a ballot than family political history.

"Both nature and nurture play a role in voting," said lead author James H. Fowler, an associate professor of political science. "We expected genes would play a little bit of a role, but we were surprised how strong [a] role they played."

Previously, experts primarily focused on the environmental factors that pushed people to vote. "For a long time, they thought that parents and children have pretty much the same behavior when it comes to voting," Fowler said. "If they voted, it's likely you will go to the polls as well."
But, rather than transmitting ideas, "parents are transmitting genes," Fowler now believes.
He co-authored a report on the issue, published in July's The Journal of Politics.

In the study, Fowler and Ph.D. candidate Christopher T. Dawes drew on voter-turnout data in Los Angeles. They matched that data to a registry of identical and non-identical twins.
According to that analysis, 53 percent of the variation in voter turnout is due to differences in genes.

In fact, family upbringing appears to have little effect on how regularly offspring participate in elections. "The other half of the voting behavior was mostly attributable to the unshared environment between the two twins," Fowler said.

To try to replicate the findings more broadly across the country, Fowler and Dawes looked at nationwide voting patterns using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, which ran from 1994 to 2002.

Using the genetic data in this study, Fowler and Dawes found that 72 percent of differences in voter turnout among identical twins can be accounted for by genes.

Genes also play a significant role in political participation, including giving money to a campaign, contacting a government official, running for office and attending political rallies, the two researchers found.

Fowler and Dawes also looked for specific genes involved in the decision to vote. They found that two genes that influence the brain's serotonin system, called MAOA and 5HTT, were also associated with a person's inclination to cast a ballot. The serotonin system helps regulates trust and social interaction, the experts noted.

In fact, they found that people with more efficient versions of those genes were about 10 percent more likely to vote.

"It's not just the gene that makes you vote, but it has an impact on how susceptible you are to different kinds of environments," Fowler said. "Depending upon what kind of environment you are in, it is going to activate those tendencies you might have to cause you to participate in politics or not."

To thoroughly understand politics, one has to include genetics, Fowler now believes.
"To study politics without genes is to miss half the story," he said. "To really get an understanding of what people are doing and why they are doing it, we need to integrate both nature and nurture into the study of politics," he said.

According to John T. Jost, a professor of psychology at New York University in New York City, this article is another in a growing list of studies suggesting that political orientation is partly heritable.

"In some ways, this conclusion is not so surprising, given that we have known for over 50 years that there are basic cognitive, motivational, and behavioral differences between leftists and rightists," Jost said.

"Unless one believes that basic psychological characteristics have no genetic antecedents whatsoever, one would have anticipated these results on the basis of the psychological literature," Jost said. "Still, it's quite important that these researchers appear to have identified specific gene combinations that are linked to political orientation," he said.
